Style, Thickness, Width, and Length

Our unfinished flooring is available with square edges and ends for a traditional look or with beveled edges, beveled ends, or both in a variety of bevel sizes for a more customized look. Standard thickness is 3/4″, but custom thicknesses may also be available to suit specific projects. Standard widths are 2 1/4″-12″, and other custom widths may also be available upon request. Standard lengths are 1′-7′ +/- in standard 7′ nested bundles, and longer lengths are 1′-10′ +/- in custom, non-nested bundles, subject to 5% mill overrun. Custom length orders are also common. Available in a wide variety of domestic species and grades, all unfinished flooring is tongue and grooved, and end matched.

Grade

Flooring grades available are Clear, Select, #1 Common, and #2 Common/Character. These grades are pictured below in red oak to give an idea of the distinctions, though grading rules do change per species. In addition to grading, certain species, such as Cherry and Walnut, can be ordered with varying levels of sap wood, and other species, such as Maple and Ash, can be sorted for lighter color.

Other Hardwood Flooring Options

We offer a wide variety of options to customize your hardwood flooring to suit your specific tastes.

Many of these options listed below can be used in conjunction with others to create a truly unique floor.

Wide widths: Up to 12″.
Random widths: For example, mixing 3″, 4″, and 5″ width flooring.

Long lengths: For example, 2′ and longer (to avoid the “shorties”) or 3′ and longer for a more elegant look.

Pegged ends: For example, walnut pegs in a red oak floor.
Quarter sawn: Has a very straight grain and uniform appearance, with the added benefit of being about twice as dimensionally stable as plainsawn flooring.
Reclaimed: Generally available in mixed Red and White Oak.
Hand-Planed: A different look from the more commonly seen hand-scraped styles. Each plank is carefully shaped and distressed with a hand planer. An excellent choice for those looking for a more subtle, hand-distressed style.
Hand-Scraped: A unique and beautiful style; each plank is crafted using hand tools to achieve a timeless elegance. Producing hand-scraped flooring is a labor-intensive process. Each board is scraped by hand by a skilled Amish craftsman, ensuring a beautifully textured floor for your home.
Hand-Distressed: A subtle custom option in which each board is hand-beveled and distressed giving the overall floor an antique quality.
Circular Sawn: Reproduces the look of lumber from old-time sawmills. These mills cut their logs using huge circular blades, giving the boards distinctive character.
Band Sawn: Another way to reproduce the look of lumber from the old-time saw mills. Many mills began to use band saws over huge circular blades in the late 1800’s, and this artisan option reproduces these perpendicular blade marks rather than those created by circular blades.
Wire Brushed: A beautifully textured floor with a pronounced grain and a weathered look. This process enhances the natural difference between the soft and hard grains in the wood by sanding out the soft grain more deeply than the hard grain, giving it a texture similar to old barnwood that has been exposed to the elements for ages.
Contour-Sanded: Uniquely textured for the effect of a foot worn floor hundreds of years old.
Custom Finishes: We are experienced in using a wide variety of hardwood floor finishes so you can choose the color and finish which best fits your floor and situation.
Oil Base Stain: Used to seal and color the bare wood prior to the other coats of finish. Stains are used to alter the natural color of the wood, but are semitransparent to allow the grain of the wood still to show through.
Oil Base Urethane Finish: A mainstream finish that goes on in multiple coats creating layers of build over the wood to protect it. A durable finish whose natural golden tint enhances the beauty of most woods and stains.
Water Base Urethane Finish: A water base finish otherwise very similar to its oil base counterpart. Quick-drying and very durable. Dries clear, giving wood its most natural look. Also, many are low in VOC’s.
Tung Oil Finish: Another film building finish similar to an oil base urethane. Penetrates deep into the wood. Beautiful alone or used with a stain. Often used on antique heart pine or reclaimed floors because of the deep, rich colors in the wood it brings out.
Penetrating Oil Finish: The most natural look for wood floors. This non-film building finish penetrates, colors, and seals the wood fibers on a molecular level in a single coat. It is a good choice for floors with any sort of customized face treatment due to its unparalleled ease of touching up, repairing, and recoating. It provides a matte sheen that preserves the natural look and feel of the wood more so than traditional film building finishes. Originating in Europe, it has become more and more popular in the U.S. over the last several years.

we also offer a wide variety of other hardwood flooring options to suit a greater range of needs, interests, and budgets.

Because of our direct connection to a family mill, we are able to offer other hardwood flooring options to suit a greater range of needs, interests, and budgets.

Limitations & Restrictions:

These other options, however, are not generally available for advanced customization and are typically only available in standard thicknesses, 1′-7′ lengths, and 2 1/4″, 3″, 3 1/4″, 4″, and 5″ widths, depending on the product.

Exotic Unfinished Solid Hardwood Flooring:

Common exotic unfinished solid species include Australian Cypress, Bamboo, Brazilian Cherry, Santos Mahogany, Tigerwood, Cumaru, Merbau, Sapele, and Tiete Rosewood, to name a few, with these and others potentially available upon request.

Exotic unfinished solid flooring is typically available only in 3/4″ thickness, 1′-7′ lengths, and 3″, 4″, and 5″ widths.

Prefinished Solid Hardwood Flooring:

Prefinished solid hardwood flooring is available in many domestic and exotic species to suit a wide variety of needs and interests.

Via our network of local distributors, we are able to supply many of the most popular prefinished products from many manufacturers, such as Aacer, Barefoot, Bruce, Impressions Hardwood Collection, Mullican, Mercier, and Mirage.

Though the options for advanced customization in length, width, stain color, finish, and face treatments are unavailable, prefinished flooring is still available in many different styles. Prefinished flooring can also sometimes be a more cost and time effective option in certain situations since it is ready to be used as soon as installation is complete. Typically, thickness is 3/4″, lengths are 1′-7′, and widths are 2 1/4″, 3″, 3 1/4″, 4″, and 5″, but these specifications vary by manufacturer and product.

Unfinished and Prefinished Engineered Hardwood Flooring:

Engineered hardwood flooring is also available in many domestic and exotic species in both prefinished and unfinished to suit a wide variety of needs. Engineered hardwood is composed of crisscrossed layers of plywood as its base with a layer of actual hardwood veneer at its top.

Depending on the manufacturer and product, it can have a total thickness from about 3/8″ up to 3/4″ with a hardwood veneer thickness from about 1/16″ up to 1/4″. The number of crisscrossed layers of plywood as its base will also vary by manufacturer and product.

Because of its layered construction, engineered flooring is typically more dimensionally stable than solid hardwood flooring. For this reason, it can be used in certain higher-moisture applications where solid hardwood generally cannot, such as over radiant heat, on concrete slabs, and below grade.

The downside to engineered flooring is that products with a thickness and hardwood wear layer comparable to that of solid hardwood are typically significantly more expensive.

Quality, widths, lengths, species, and other specifications available vary drastically from manufacturer to manufacturer and product to product.
